Why Do Dogs Lick Their Paws Continuously

Dogs lick their paws as part of self-grooming routines, however excessive licking could be a red flag. While paw licking is a common behaviour, some additional reasons your dog is licking their paw include anxiety, stress, obsessive behaviour, flea allergies or boredom.

We speak to the experts to find out everything you need to know, including what paw licking means and how you can stop your dog from doing it. Take a look at what you need to know...

Why does my dog lick his paws so much?

"Licking comes naturally to dogs. It's an important way of grooming, showing emotion and communicating," a health expert at the Kennel Club tells Country Living. "Licking is soothing to dogs and causes them to release dopamine and endorphins that can help make them feel better if they're feeling stressed or under the weather."

Some of the other reasons your dog might lick his paws include:

  1. Food allergies
  2. Environmental allergies
  3. Flea allergies
  4. Cleaning skin
  5. Showing emotion
  6. Dry skin
  7. Obsessive behaviour
  8. Anxious behaviour
  9. Boredom

What your dog is trying to warn about when they lick their paws?

While it's usually nothing to worry about, pay close to attention to how regularly your pup is licking.

"Dogs usually lick their paws to clean themselves, but it can also be a sign that something is wrong," the Kennel Club add. "If your dog has suddenly begun licking themselves a lot then you may want to talk to your vet and get them checked out. Repeatedly licking their paws can be a sign that they are stressed or anxious, or could suggest that they are in pain, feeling nauseous, uncomfortable or itchy."

How do I stop my dog from licking his paws?

A simple and effective way to address your dog's paw-licking behaviour is to simply distract them. Some of the things you can do include taking them for a walk, offering them mentally-stimulating toys, playing with them or giving them a yummy snack. Remember to not scald them for licking, but to instead divert their attention.

If you are still having trouble stopping your dog from licking, head to your local vet. It could be an underlying issue of something more serious.

Should I stop my dog from licking his paws?

To put a permanent stop to the issue, first find the main cause. If you can't distract them with toys or treats, it could be time to seek expert advice from the vet.
